Movie studios always have high hopes for their films but not all of their releases go on to be major blockbusters. That is exactly the case with these films that were so bad they doomed any further additions to the franchise.

The Lone Ranger (2013)

The Lone Ranger went on to make $260 million at the box office but that barely covered the estimated $250 million budget. Add in some complains about cultural appropriation from casting Johnny Depp as a Native American and The Lone Ranger was doomed from the start.

Conan the Barbarian (2011)

Before Jason Mamoa went on to play Aquaman, he was part of an awful 2011 reboot of Conan. After only making 2/3rds of its production budget back at the box office, Conan was laid to rest and any future works were cancelled.

Eragon (2006)

Eragon was commercially a success at the box office as it his #1 in its opening week but that doesn’t mean that everyone enjoyed it. Due to widespread criticism, Disney shelved any further titles but a live-action adaption is scheduled to hit Disney+.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)

After losing Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures over $150 million, it is no surprise any further films were dismissed. Before the first film became a total abomination, Warner Bros. had planned to release 6 total movies.

Planet of the Apes (2001)

What could go wrong when you have Tim Burton directing a film starring Mark Wahlberg? Apparently, a lot can go wrong. Planet of the Apes was commercially a success but a confusing plot line and mixed reviews ultimately shut down any further films until the 2011 reboot, Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Jumper (2008)

While 3 more books have been released in the original series, talks of a sequel have gone dormant in recent years despite raking in $140 million more at the box office than the movie cost to film.

Godzilla (1998)

Mixed reviews after its release led to an early grave for the first modern American adaptation of Godzilla back in ’98. Considered a box office disappointment, all subsequent films were cancelled and an animated show was created to continue the story.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant (2016)

Everyone was looking to cash in on the success of The Hunger Games but fail actually succeeded. One of the biggest disappointments from the dystopian franchise came when the 4th movie was cancelled, ultimately leaving the trilogy ending on a cliffhanger.

Talks of a TV show were in the works but later scrapped after Shailene Woodley said she would not reprise her lead role.

Battlefield Earth (2000)

When a movie goes down as “one of the worst of all-time”, no one should expect subsequent films to follow. Especially when the movie is so bad that it leads to the production studio being sued and forced to shut down.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

No one asked for a Spider-Man remake after the Tobey Maguire trilogy but that is exactly what we got in 2012. Following poor box office performance, Sony cancelled any further plans for The Amazing Spider-Man and the Sinister Six.

Batman & Robin (1997)

Following poor critical and financial reception, George Clooney vowed to never play Batman again. While a sequel titled Batman: Unchained was in discussion, the film was later scrapped.

Terminator: Genisys (2015)

We all have a fond memory of The Terminator from our childhood but movie studios keep trying to tarnish it every chance they get. Even though Terminator: Genisys made the 2nd most money of all the films in the franchise, critics were not a fan of the film and its sequels and TV show spin-off were cancelled.

Even though Terminator: Genisys made the 2nd most money of all the films in the franchise, critics were not a fan of the film and its sequels and TV show spin-off were cancelled.

Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (2013)

After railing to recoup the budget of the first film, Screen Gems abandoned any further films in 2014.

Superman Returns (2006)

Superman Returns recieved positive marks upon its release but that wasn’t enough to keep the studio around. While a 2009 sequel was planned, it was cancelled and the series was rebooted in 2013.

The Golden Compass (2007)

Hollywood once again overshot their target when they created the Golden Compass. Originally slated as a trilogy, New Line Cinema shelved further films in 2008 citing financial concerns over a global recession.

The Last Airbender (2010)

M. Night Shyamalan made lifelong enemies when he released The Last Airbender in 2010. Following universal backlash and low profits, the planned trilogy was cancelled.

John Carter (2012)

What began as one of the most expensive films ever made turned into one of the biggest flops of all-time for Disney. John Carter was originally planned as a trilogy but Disney abandoned all hope after the first film tanked.

The Green Lantern (2011)

Even Ryan Reynolds wants to forget this catastrophe. Fortunately for all of us viewers, The Green Lantern trilogy was cancelled after the first film flopped but we wont be able to forget that one as long as we live.

According to a LADbible post, just six of the hundreds of movies nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars were horror flicks.

The Exorcist, which debuted in 1974, received the first-ever Best Picture nomination for a horror movie.

Since the Academy Awards first began in 1929, this was the first nomination for a horror movie.

The film was also nominated in 10 other categories, “including Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay.”

Ultimately, the film won the awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound Mixing.

The following year, 1975’s Jaws became the second horror film nominated for Best Picture.

Unfortunately, it did not win.

There was a bit of a lull in horror film nominations at the Academy Awards until 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs, which became the first horror flick to win the award for Best Picture.

The film also won awards for “Best Actor, Actress, Director, and Adapted Screenplay.”

The next Best Picture nomination came for M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense in 1999.

In 2010, Black Swan received a nomination for the Best Picture award.

The most recent horror film nominated for Best Picture was Jordan Peele’s 2017 film, Get Out.

Get Out was also nominated for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actor.

Movie trailers are supposed to get us excited about the films they’re previewing. However, there are many sins these trailers commit that make the movies look like crap. Call me strange, but I’m a person who LOVES movie trailers before the feature film so I can very much relate to these.

M. Knight’s name popping up at any point.
Derby1991

When the reviews mentioned in the trailer are in HUGE letters but then the publication that wrote them is so small you can’t read it. I always assume this means some obscure site liked the movie but no one reputable had anything good to say.

“Absolute masterpiece”
– Billy from his couch in Cleveland.

No.
Mvalentinec

When they highlight a particular joke or bit and you just KNOW that’s as funny as the film gets.
Emazinggrace12

When the entire cast are A List celebrities even the barista is like Michael Cera and they do that thing at the end where they have all 50 of their names in bold so you get excited. I promise you 10/10 times will lead to disappointment.
am2022

It may sound backward, but with comedy movies, if the entire trailer is hilarious, like laughing from start to finish, it makes me think that they put pretty much all the best funny parts in the trailer and the rest of the movie’s humor is gonna be mediocre.
guacward

“…starring Rob Schneider”
RUN AWAY
miznortonbuswell

When it’s edited in a way that gives absolutely none of the plot away but just focuses on catchy one-liners and the cast. Trailers giving away the whole plot is one thing, but if you finish it feeling beyond confused and without a single idea what the movie is about, the plot will likely be convoluted or just not good which is why they focus on the cast to draw you in.
katcloud

When they say “brought to you by the studio that made (insert wildly popular movie). That usually means the movie isn’t good enough to stand on it’s own.
carolineb433a87096

trailers that use viewer’s reactions in theater OR after like, “I loved this movie!!” and random people are standing in front of a pop up from the movie
demons

whenever they use a popular song that doesn’t fit the tone at all. You can tell they just threw in a song they knew people would recognize to trick people into thinking the movie would be good.
321missmaximoff

Anybody farting
buzzkeeper

For a horror movie, I swear, they show you every scare in the trailer, then it’s just all fluff in between. So I spent 2 minutes getting as scared as I’m going to get during this movie. I have learned; I wait until it’s streaming to see it then and I’m usually right. Saved $18 and can have wine at home.
morganleslay

Generic boy & girl timidly crushing on one another and NOTHING else… not even a reference to film title. Like Licorice Pizza and it’s totally unappealing movie trailer. It’s ONLY selling point was the Haim sister.
Privatefaces

When they have like 10 production companies attached to one film. Usually equates to “Too many cooks in the kitchen”.
ntoombs44

bad CGI? i took one look at She Hulk’s trailer and was like this is so bad (not a movie so not the same budget but still)
wasbnd

When it’s released just after the Oscars and the only thing mentioned on the poster is that it stars the Oscar winning actor. Generally means the distributor are just using the name to drive sales for a film that probably stuck in post production hell and should have never seen the light of day.
laureng429de0422

If I see Melissa McCarthy or Adam Sandler in the trailer then it’s almost certainly going to be a shit film.
dazzlingminion93

When the trailer is basically a summary of the movie. There’s some trailers that show so much of the movie that you don’t need to see the movie. I remember one of the newer terminator movies had a trailer that completely gave away the twist and ruined the movie for me.
