The projects are quite feasible even for enthusiastic beginners with needle and thread.
Repurposing old sweaters – Warm mittens

Let’s give your old sweater a second life by turning it into beautiful warm mittens! With just a few simple materials and the most basic stitches, you will have gorgeous mittens in a few minutes! Follow these steps on the photo and read the instructions below to make mittens from old sweater.

For this idea it would be better to choose a wool sweater. Hand-wash the sweater with warm water, then pat dry on a clean towel and allow to air-dry for several hours. That way the wool fibers will be huddled together so they do not fall apart when you cut it afterwards. Dry cleaning can stiffen the wool fibers and reshape sweaters significantly after drying.

– Turn the sweater inside out and put it on the table. Put your hand on one of the side edges and outline the mitten shape around it. Add approximately 1 cm on the outside of the perimeter and cut along the contour of your mitten.
– Pin several safety pins on the edges to keep the two layers from shifting while you sew.
– Thread the needle and do simple stitches along your contour. Make sure that the lower part of the mitten is wide enough so that your hand could easily fit. Remove the excess fabric. Be careful not to cut too close to the stitching.
– Now the fun part! Remove the pins and turn over to see the finished mitten.
– Use buttons, colorful threads and other decorations to make the mitten more interesting.
– Repeat all the steps for the right hand mitten.
Repurposing old sweaters – Handmade winter hats

– Place the fabric in position so that the side seams meet in the front.
– Pin pins along the bottom of the sweater and sew a straight line to join the two sides.

One of your old sweater can be ideal to create new decorative throw-pillows.

It takes a minimum of cutting and sewing, but these pillows will please the eye and create a warm and inviting atmosphere in the house. You can decorate them as you wish with buttons, wool flowers, or other decorations.

Plaid from old sweaters

If you have a lot of unused sweaters in your closet, you can combine them to make a blanket or a quilt.

You will need to cut each sweater in to pieces in order to obtain a “patchwork” style. Imagine how useful it would be to have a blanket at hand on the couch in the cold winter evenings.

Fingerless gloves without knitting!

– Cut the sleeves of the sweater.
– Define the length of your finger gloves. Add about 2 cm to the length and cut.
– Secure the cut on a sewing machine with a zigzag stitch or overlock.
– Wrap the ends of the sleeve by 2 cm and sew with a needle and thread.
– Put the glove on your hand, and define the location for the hole for the thumb. Cut where you want it to be. Gently unravel the threads of the seam until the hole gets a comfortable size for the thumb. Then fix the hole with a needle and thread.
– Since the sleeves a little wider than the gloves should be, you need to reduce a bit their diameter. To do this, put the gloves on your hands, hold the excess fabric along the length of the sleeve, attach several pins.
– Remove the gloves. Secure and stitch with a needle and thread, using the back stitch. Now your favorite sweater can stay with you for a few more years!

We’re big fans of nail polish collections in general, and winter is THE season for collections. China Glaze’s Holiday Joy collection is filled with cheery reds, festive green and gold, wintery blue and silver, and fun glitters perfect for New Year’s.

Hanukkah Floam
Hanukkah Floam from Ninja Polish’s Winter 2012 collection has a clear base with a ton of glitter in varying shades of bright blue. Small holographic pieces will catch the candlelight and add an insane amount of sparkle.

French Winter
This look takes three of this year’s trends – French tips, ombre, and metallics – and combines them for a stunning wintertime manicure. Start with a clear base coat, then add a thin gold French tip. Once it’s dry, add another small line of gold on top and while it’s still wet, sponge or drag a silver and gold glitter from the tip of your nail to the middle.

French Christmas
We’ve seen a lot of red and green nail looks, but this is this first Christmas matte French manicure we’ve come across. We love it because it’s fun yet sophisticated; the matte finish tones down shimmery polishes that might be too flashy for your tastes, and the subtle gloss French tip so chic!

French Hanukkah
Colored French tips on bare nails have been a big hit this year. A swipe of a bright glittery blue makes for a quick, easy, and fun Hanukkah look. You can add a tiny star of David by dipping a toothpick in silver polish or by using a silver nail pen.

Sweater Weather
Thick knit sweaters are wonderful in the middle of winter (or fall, winter, and some of spring if you live in Canada). Why not deck your nails with classic sweater print images? If you’re really coordinated, you can try free-handing this look using white polish and a toothpick or small paintbrush. For the rest of us who are all thumbs, we’ll stick with stencils.

Midnight Snow Stamp
Speaking of stencils, you can create really elaborate looks like this one by using stencil and stamp tools. A white stamp on a dark background works really well. You can add garlands of glitter if you like, but it looks just as fabulous without.

Christmas Lights
Okay, we know this look isn’t for everyone, but it’s just so fabulous we had to include it. You already know we love French tips and glittery polish, but the tiny lights? That’s just too amazing.

Green & Gold
We love that dark green is one of the hottest colors of the season. This deep evergreen is “Going Incognito” by Essie, and that stunning large gold glitter polish is “Gold” by Milani. You’ll have to use quite a few coats of the glitter, but just look how beautiful it turns out!

Red & Multi-glitter
In contrast to the colored-nails-with-glitter-accent-nail look, we have the glitter-nails-with-colored-accent-nail look. (We’re still working on a shorter name.) This very well might be our absolute favorite look for the holidays, and with all the gorgeous red and multi-glitter polishes that just came out, we’ll have plenty of choices to play with.
