Born on July 20, 1975, Aimee Mullins is an American athlete, actress and fashion model who initially attained fame for her success in athletics. Mullins was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She had a fibular hemimelia problem since birth and this led to the amputation of her legs below the knees, when she was a year old. Mullins is a graduate of Parkland High School in Allentown and Georgetown University in Washington D.C. She got involved with sports and acting at an early age. During her time at Georgetown, Mullins won a Foreign Affairs Internship program and worked at The Pentagon.
Mullins was the first amputee ever to participate in Division 1 NCAA track and field. She was chosen as the representative of all American female athletes from 2007-2009 as the President of the Women’s Sports Foundation, which was founded by fellow sports legend Billie Jean King.
She was called as one of the “Coolest Girls in Sports” by Sports Illustrated magazine. Mullins participated in the Paralympics in 1996 in Atlanta where she ran the T42-46 class 100 meter sprint in 17.01 seconds and jumped 3.14 meters in the F42-46 class long jump, and came last in both finals. In the year 1998, Mullins retired from competitive track and field events.
In the following year she started modelling by appearing on the runway. She did modelling for British fashion designer Alexander McQueen and opened his London show. She walked on a pair of hand carved wooden prosthetic legs fashioned from solid ash with integral boots. She can adjust her height from 5 feet 8 inches and 6 feet 1 inch by changing her legs.
In the year 2002, Mullins appeared in a Matthew Barney movie Cremaster 3 where she played six different characters. Her other big and small screen acting credits include Oliver Stone’s World Trade Center, Five Little Pigs, Naked in a Fishbowl, Quid Pro Quo and Marvelous.
Mullins is a well-known speaker on topics about body, identity, design and innovation. Her TED conference talks have been converted into 42 languages.
Mullins started romancing English actor Rupert Friend in 2013. They got engaged in May 2014 and married on May 1, 2016.
