Born as Elizabeth Clark Phair on April 17, 1967 in New Haven, Connecticut, she is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, composer  and actress. Phair was adopted at birth and grew up in Chicago area. After she graduated from Oberlin College in 1990, she tried to  launch a musical career in San Francisco, California, but, went back to her home in Chicago, where she started self-releasing audio  cassettes under the name Girly Sound. The Girly Sound tapes resulted in her signing a recording contract with the independent record  label Matador Records.

Her debut studio album, Exile in Guyville was released in 1993 to great critical acclaim. Rolling Stone has ranked it among the 500  Greatest Albums of All Time. Phair’s next album was Whip-Smart (1994) which got her nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock  Vocal Performance, and White chocolate space egg (1998). A decade after her debut, Phair’s fourth album Liz Phair (2003)was released  on Capitol Records and her music took a more pop-rock style, making her popular among the mainstream audience.

After her fifth album, Somebody’s Miracle released in the year 2005, Phair separated with Capitol Records, and her sixth album  Funstyle was released independently in 2010. In the year 2016, she toured as the opening act for The Smashing Pumpkins. In 2018,  announcement was made that Matador Records would be releasing a retrospective set for Phair’s debut album Exile in Guyville that  featured remastered recordings of her original Girly Sound demo tapes.

As of 2011, Phair had sold more than three million records globally. In the year 1994, Phair started dating film editor Jim  Staskauskas. They got married on March 11, 1995. Phair gave birth to their son named James Nicholas Staskauskas on December 21, 1996.

In the year 2001, she divorced Staskauskas after which Phair sold her Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood and relocated to Los
Angeles, California. As of 2018, Phair is a resident of Manhattan Beach, California.
