Born as Octavia Lenora Spencer on May 25, 1972 in Montgomery, Alabama, she is an American actress, author, and film producer. She has six siblings including her sisters Rosa and Areka. Her mother used to work a s a maid. She was thirteen years of age when her father died. Spencer graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in the year 1988. She later studied at the Auburn University at Montgomery and graduated from Auburn University from where she majored in English with a double minor in journalism and theater. Spencer suffers from dyslexia.
Spencer has received a number of honours, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award and a Golden Globe Award. She is one of the only two black actresses to have received three nominations for Academy Award, the other being Viola Davis.
Spencer debuted in the films in a 1996 drama A Time To Kill. After playing minor roles on small and big screen for ten years, she landed her breakthrough in the year 2011 when she appeared as a maid in the 1960s America in The Help. This performance won her numerous awards including the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award and BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Spencer further appeared in films like Smashed (2012), Snowpiercer (2013), Get On Up (2014), The Divergent Series (2015-2016) and Gifted (2017).She won Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress for playing two more female characters in 1960s America, the mathematician Dorothy Vaughan in a biographical drama movie Hidden Figures (2016) and a cleaning woman I the romantic dark fantasy drama movie The Shape of Water (2017). Her movie producing credits include being the executive producer on Green Book (2018).
As an author, Spencer has started working on a children’s book series titled Randi Rhodes, Ninja Detective. She has already published two books from the series titled The Case of the Time-Capsule Bandit (2013) and The Sweetest Heist in History (2015).
