James and Dorothy Larkin brought their daughter, Joan Marie Larkin, a few days after she was born on September 22, 1958. Joan has two other siblings, and she is the eldest. At 14 years old, Joan got her first guitar, which inspired her to take guitar lessons. However, she quit after a few lessons since her instructor kept teaching her folk songs.

Her family lived in a decent home in Pennsylvania until they moved to West Covina, California, to support Joan’s dream of being a musician. However, a few months after the move, her parents divorced, motivating Joan’s decision to change her last name to Jett, her mother’s maiden name.

Joan founded the band The Runaways with drummer Sandy West. Micki Steel, Jackie Fox, and Cherie Currie joined the line-up of the teen rocker chicks soon after. Although Curie was the lead singer of the band, Joan sometimes does lead vocals, co-wrote, and even wrote other songs. The seismic group of bikini bod teens released three ass-kicking albums, Live in Japan being the album with the biggest hit in the U.S. and U.K. markets.

Their music got transmitted around the world, including Asia and Europe. They had a world tour with many other successful bands like Ramones and Cheap Trick. However, their worldwide success was not the same in the U.S. Then, Currie left the group, but they were still able to release two other albums before they disbanded in 1979.

Joan was so determined to put up another band after the fall of The Runaways that she posted an ad on L.A. Weekly, saying she needs three good men. John Doe then saw the ad and auditioned for bass. Then came Gary Ryan, who was also John’s roommate at that time. He auditioned for bass. Eric Ambel then auditioned after Gary recommended him. And the last to audition was Danny O’Brien. After the band was complete, they started to do shows at the Golden Bear and Whisky a Go-Go in Hollywood.

In 2010, Jett and the Blackheart performed at the Falls Music and Arts Festival in Australia. In 2013, the band released the album, Unvarnished, which hit the top 50 at the Billboard charts. The last performance of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts was on July 4, 2015, when they became the opening act of the Foo Fighters anniversary concert in Washington, D.C.
