Born as Diamonte Harper on July 2, 1993, she is an American rapper and songwriter from Hayward California, renowned as Saweetie.
She was raised mostly in Hayward and spent major part of her life in San Francisco Bay Area. However, she finished high school from Elk Grove, California where she attended Monterey Trail High School. She started music writing at the age of fourteen. After completing high school, she attended San Diego State University and later transferred to the University of Southern California where she studied Communications and Business. After her graduation, she started focusing on her rap career.
Saweetie started by posting brief raps on her Instagram account in the year 2016. One of her videos featured her rapping over the beat from Khia’s Classic, “My Neck, My Back (Lick It)” which later turned into Icy Grl. She initially launched the song on her SoundCloud account in summer of 2017 and later released a music video for the same in October 2017. The video that went viral online, went on to garner sixty four million views on YouTube by December 2018.
It was followed by a freestyle rap titled “High Maintenance” which had a short clip featuring herself rapping to the song, as she was relaxing in her kitchen. The video went viral on Instagram and Twitter. In October 2017, she released a video for her song “Focus” which sampled DRAM’s “Gilligan.”
In January 2018, she signed to Warner Bros. Records in partnership with Artistry Worldwide and her own label known as Icy Records.
Saweetie was quoted as telling XXL in October 2017, “I do a lot of covers, but, this is the first time I’m actually doing original content. I leave the studio and I come home wanting to listen to really myself.”
Saweetie made her major label debut High Maintenance (Saweetie EP) on March 16, 2018. It featured nine tracks and was produced by CashMoneyAP, Nyrell and Saweetie’s cousin Zaytoven. Her single “Icy Girl” was certified Gold in June 2018, for having sold 500, 000 copies in the United States. “Icy Grl” soon became famous and it brought a lot of fame to Saweetie. She released her second major EP titled “Icy” on March 29, 2019.
She is reportedly dating rapper Quavo since middle of 2018.
