Born on 24 May 1960, Dame Kristin Ann Scott Thomas is an English actress. Scott Thomas was born in Redruth, Cornwall, England. Her mother was raised in Hong Kong and Africa and she studied drama before marrying Kristin’s father, Lieutenant Commander Simon Scott Thomas, a pilot in the Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm and he died in a flying accident when Kristin was five.
Scott Thomas was raised as a Roman Catholic. Her childhood was spent in Trent, Dorset, England. Her mother later married another Royal Navy pilot, Lt. Cdr Simon Idiens (of Simon’s Sircus acrobatic team flying Sea Vixens) and he also died in a flying accident when he was flying a Phantom FG1 off the North Cornwall coast, six years after the death of her father. Scott Thomas studied at the Cheltenham Ladies College and St. Antony’s Leweston in Sherborne, Dorset, both independent schools. After she left school in 1978, she relocated to Hampstead, London and worked in a department store. She started training to become a drama teacher at the Central School of Speech and Drama, and enrolled on a B. Ed in Speech and Drama.
While she was at the school, she sought permission to switch degree courses to acting but was not allowed. After a year at Central, when she mostly spoke French, she decided to relocate to Paris as an au-pair and she studied acting at the Ecole nationale superjeure des arts et techniquesdu theatre (ENSATT). She was 25 when she was cast opposite the pop star Prince as Mary Sharon, a French heiress in a 1986 film Under the Cherry Moon.
She is a five times BAFTA Award winner and five times Olivier Award nominee. She won a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) and the Olivier Award for Best Actress in the year 2008 for the Royal Court revival of The Seagull. She also received an Academy Award for Best Actress for The English Patient. (1996).
Scott Thomas debuted in the Prince directed film Under the Cherry Moon (1986) and won the Evening Standard Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer for A Handful of Dust (1988). She has worked in French films such as The Valet (2006), Tell No One (2007), Leaving (2009), Love Crime (2010), Sarah’s Key (2010), and also won the European Film Award for Best Actress for Phillippe Claudel’s I’ve Loved You So Long (2008). Her other notable films include Bitter Moon (1992), Mission: Impossible (1996) The Horse Whisperer (1998), Gosford Park (2001), Nowhere Boy (2010), Only God Forgives (2013), Darkest Hour (2017) and Tomb Raider (2018).
