Born as Jennifer Grey on March 26, 1960 in Manhattan, she is an American actress. She is the daughter of stage and Academy Award winning actor Joel Grey and former actress/singer Jo Wilder (Brower). Her paternal grandfather was comedian and musician Mickey Katz. Grey’s parents are both Jewish.
Grey studied at the Dalton School, a private school located in Manhattan where she learned dance and acting, and met her best friend, actress Tracy Pollan. After she graduated in 1978, Grey enrolled at Manhattan’s Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre for two years while training as an actress. While she waited for roles, she worked as a waitress to support her expenses.
She is famous for her appearance in the 1980s movies Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) and Dirty Dancing (1987), for which Grey landed a Golden Globe Award nomination. Her TV appearances include the 2010 victory in Season Eleven of Dancing with the Stars and starring in the Amazon Studios comedy show Red Oaks.
On August 5, 1987, Grey suffered severe whiplash injuries in a deadly car crash in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland while she was on a vacation with actor Matthew Broderick, who she had started dating secretly during the shooting of Ferris Beuller’s Day Off. The accident revealed their romance to the public. It took place when Broderick was driving a rented BMW and entered the wrong lane before smashing head-on with a Volvo that was driven by a mother and daughter, Margaret Doherty (63) and her 28 year old daughter Anna Gallagher, 28, both locals who died immediately on the spot. Dirty Dancing did brilliantly and made Grey an overnight star, but, she mentioned that her grief and survivor’s guilt regarding the crash dampened her success, and she quit acting for a while.
Grey had romantic relationships with actors Michael J. Fox and Johnny Depp and journalist George Stephanopopulos. She married actor/director Clark Gregg on July 21, 2001. They have a daughter together named Stella (born on December 3, 2001). They are residents of Venice, California. The couple co-starred in a Lifetime film The Road to Christmas in the year 2006.
