As a young girl, Love had a hard time dealing with academics and social life due to her autism. During her teens, Love went through a rebellious phase while living with her mother. She got expelled at her school and arrested as a shoplifter. Her mother then sent her to foster care.

While in Los Angeles, Love decided to start a professional music career. In 1989, she created the band, Hole after she placed an ad in search of musicians. The group soon made it in the punk rock music scene with their hit singles “Retard Girl” and “Dicknail.” Through Sonic Youth, Hole released their first album, Pretty on the Inside.
