Aubrey Plaza’s career launched in improv and sketch comedy at Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, where she gained recognition for her role as April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation from 2009 to 2015.
Born on June 26, 1984, in Wilmington, Plaza was named after the song “Aubrey” by Bread. At the age of 20, she experienced a temporary paralysis caused by a stroke. Another minor stroke occurred while filming Parks and Recreation.
Early in her career, Plaza immersed herself in improv, sketch comedy, and stand-up since 2004. Her film debut came in 2008 with Funny People, playing the character Daisy. Her portrayal of April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation garnered worldwide praise. Plaza’s filmography includes Mystery Team, Damsels in Distress, Safety Not Guaranteed, The End of Love, The Little Hours, Child’s Play, and many more. She made an appearance on the 199th episode of WTF with Marc Maron and featured in the music video for the song “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings” in 2012. Plaza has also appeared in television shows such as 30 Rock, Portlandia, Drunk History, Castle, Comedy Bang Bang, and Easy. In 2019, she participated in Child’s Play as the mother who brings home the killer doll, Chucky.
Plaza openly identifies as bisexual and was previously in a relationship with Michael Cera. She is currently in a relationship with Jeff Baena and they reside together in Los Angeles.
Plaza has received multiple award nominations and has won the ALMA Award, BTVA People’s Choice Voice Acting Award, Independent Spirit Award, and more.
