Abandoned Leper Colony in NYC
This leper colony was abandoned 50 years ago. It was opened in 1885 and used to be city’s only official leper colony. It’s hard to believe but the colony located just 350 yards from the crowded tenements of the Bronx.
Social issue photographer Stephen Shames captured these beautiful images of life on the “bad” side of the Bronx, the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City.
Designed by Kitchoo, these micro-kitchens consist of a sink, microwave, dishwasher, stove-top, fridge-freezer, cutlery rack, and trash bin.
