Born in Sacramento, California, she grew up with her parents Heather and Sylvain Desaulniers, who worked together as homeopathic chiropractors. With a French Canadian father, Larson spoke French as her first language during her childhood. She received homeschooling, which allowed her to explore unique and abstract experiences. She made her debut in 1998 with a sketch comedy appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Larson gained regular exposure in the sitcom Raising Dad in 2001 and briefly pursued a music career, releasing the album Finally Out of P.E. in 2005. Notable supporting roles followed in comedy films such as Hoot (2006), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), and 21 Jump Street (2012). She also portrayed a sardonic teenager in the TV series United States of Tara (2009-2011).

Larson’s breakthrough came with the critically acclaimed independent film Short Term 12 (2013). She continued to excel in supporting roles in movies like The Spectacular Now (2013) and Trainwreck (2015). Her standout performance as a kidnapping victim in the drama Room (2015) earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. In 2017, Larson took on the role of a photojournalist in the adventure film Kong: Skull Island, which remains her highest-grossing release to date.

Beyond acting, Larson has ventured into filmmaking by co-writing and co-directing two short films, The Arm (2012) and Weighting (2013), with the former receiving a special jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival. She made her feature film directorial debut in 2017 with the independent comedy-drama Unicorn Store. In March 2019, Larson made her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the titular character in Captain Marvel. She is an advocate for sexual assault survivors and uses her platform to raise awareness about socio-political issues.
