Champagne shades are a makeup bag must have. They’re so versatile and can create a range of gorgeous looks. Especially if you have blue eyes, you’ll be reaching for this colour again and again. Recreate this look by sweeping a stunning champagne shade right across the eyelid. Take a light brown shade and blend throughout the crease and outwards. Drag the brown to the outer corner and drag it under the lower lash line too.

1. Choose the Right Shade

There are countless different shades of blue makeup. If you want to apply blue makeup products, make sure before you do that you are picking the right shades that complement your skin tone and eye color.

Beauty lovers who have fair skin tones look best with lighter shades of blue that don’t look too dramatic against their pale skin. Those who have tan skin are complemented by turquoise and brighter blue shades, while those with deep skin tones can pull off cobalt and true blue colors.

Also, if you have blue eyes, you should avoid wearing blue eye makeup that is excessively bright in order to prevent washing out the natural blue color of your eyes and making them look gray. Darker cobalt and navy shades look best if you have blue eyes.

2. Try Color Blocking

Color blocking, or applying the same shade of blue eyeshadow across your entire eyelid, is the blue makeup trend that is most often condemned as a 1980s style catastrophe. However, it can actually work really well to create a dramatic and effortless look for those who are interested in trying blue makeup but feel too intimidated by the prospect of the shading and blending that many blue makeup looks require.

To color block your eyes with blue makeup, choose a creamy eyeshadow formula. Use the pad of your index finger to smooth the eyeshadow across your eyelid from the inner corner of your eye to its outer edge. Then, use a Q-tip to blend the edges of your eyeshadow outward to soften them. Never apply color-blocked blue eyeshadow above the crease of your eye. This will cause your eyes to appear as though they are receding and can create an unattractive, hollowed look.

3. Pair Blue with Nude

If you want to try blue eye makeup for a look that can be worn everyday and does not look too dramatic, try pairing blue eye makeup with neutral eye makeup colors.

You can use a turquoise eyeliner (such as the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Electric ($20.00) to brighten up a look that incorporates several neutral shades of eye shadow. You can also try adding a pop of blue color in the inner corner or outer edge of your eyelid within an eye makeup look that includes primarily warm-toned beige or gold colors.

Blue makeup isn’t just for your eyes. There are countless blue lipstick shades available. While you might think that blue lipstick would only look appropriate for Halloween corpse makeup, it can actually provide a bright and daring focal point for your makeup look. It’s all about finding the right formula and the right shade.

It is true that bright and powder blue lipsticks can wash out your skin tone and make you look, well, deceased. However, navy lipstick can be a great alternative to black lipstick when you want to try out a dark and dramatic lip color but don’t want to go all the way black. The Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Echo ($20.00) is a beautiful satin navy blue color that provides a dramatic focal point for your makeup but is a bit brighter and less gothic than black lipstick.

5. Go Matte

Matte finishes are always your best bet when it comes to blue eye makeup. If you try to use shimmer or glitter blue eye makeup formulas, it’s likely that your makeup look will end up appearing excessively bright or overwhelming, which is not what you want. If you’re wearing any blue eye makeup at all, even if it just an accent color incorporated within a look that includes several other more neutral shades, keep all of your eye makeup matte to create a more sophisticated look.

One exception to this rule is with darker navy colors or certain blue eyeliners. The Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in LSD (a dark navy with turquoise shimmer) and Deep End (a shimmery metallic turquoise) ($20.00) are great products that break the matte rule but flatter almost any skin tone and eye color without appearing too overwhelming.

Here’s a style to try if you’re feeling bold. Sweep green shadow under your eyes and out across your temples for an edgy look. You can always tone it down by just using a little bit of shadow to create a hint of color.

This green glitter look was created by makeup artist Benjamin Puckey for Glarmour Germany’s April 2012 issue. It mimics the classic smokey eye but with the obvious change in color and, you know, sparkle.

This gorgeous midnight blue look was created by a Swedish amateur photographer and makeup artist. This is a great look to do for a night out. Use a dark blue eyeliner or cream eyeshadow and top it with glitter.

Canadian makeup artist Ashley Lynn created this look as part of her “Wearable Sins” series. With a perfect emerald smokey eye underlined with brilliant purple, well color us green with envy.

Here’s a fun twist on the regular old holiday party. Throw a costume party! Or just dress up yourself, like this winter goddess did. Or keep this idea around for Halloween reference.

If you look close, you’ll see that six different eyeshadow shades were used to create this look. Six! Those are some serious blending skills.

Here’s an idea: grab makeup idea from materials and patterns than inspire you. Peacock feather are great for eye makeup because they already look like eyes! This is a perfect example of how to use that peacock palette.

Makeup artists everywhere, from the major artists to teen girls, are loving Paperself’s cut-out lashes with patterns like “deer and butterflies,” “under the sea,” and “peacock” used here. Lashes aside, this makeup look is so intricate, we just have to admire it.

So we’ve covered using peacock feathers and a color inspiration and as cut-out lashes, so it’s about time we show actual feathers used in makeup. We love the bold look of these lashes with big glitter and face paint.

Here’s another inspiration idea: under the sea. Every gal has been (or will be) a mermaid for Halloween. It’ll happen, trust us. And when you do, it’s a great opportunity to go all out with makeup. We’re not saying you have to paint actual scales like Rashell here did…but you could.

Another great costume look, this is part makeup part face paint. You don’t have to use blue and green, but we recommend using a bit of white no matter what you do to add dimensions.

Okay, so this is ALL blue, but take a look at it and you’ll find it’s actually a really interesting makeup look. With bright green filling the eye socket and sweeping way up the temples, topped with bright blue over the eyebrow, it’s essentially and expanded version of every stuff. Like what drag queens do! Except…not…

Is it practical? No. But so we love it? Yes. Very yes. There aren’t many occasions when covering half your face in glitter works (much to out dismay) but if you find one, hot dang! take it!

Woah! Yeah. We know. But if we’re going with bold blue and green makeup looks we really can’t say no to this. We can’t even begin to imagine how long this look took to achieve, but we really admire the detail.

Hey, you know what? It’s makeup! And it’s blue! And it’s awesome! So we’re throwing it in here. It took hours and dozens of prosthetics and what we can only assume was a metric crapton of blue paint to get actresses Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence looking like the shapeshifting Mystique in the X-Men movies, but we say it was well worth it.
